Importance of CMI

Consumer Medicine Information (CMI), is a document that provides information about prescription medicine in a reader-friendly format for consumers. The CMI is intended to provide information and instructions that enable patients to use the medicine safely and effectively.

It is prepared according to specific guidelines that ensure the information is accurate, unbiased and easy to understand. CMI's are available for prescription and some non-prescription medicines.

The CMI has a standard format that includes clear headings in a logical sequence. It contains simple instructions and straightforward explanations of what patients need to do to get the best results from their medicine. It is designed to help the patient locate the information he/she needs easily, without having to search.

The growth of the consumer movement heralded a new chapter in giving patients the right to know more about their medications and treatments. In 1990, legislation was passed in Australia making it mandatory for products, deemed to fall under the classification of therapeutic goods, to provide information either:

  • in the primary pack in which the therapeutic goods are supplied; or
  • in another manner that will enable the information to be given to a person

Pharmaceutical Companies have a legal obligation to make CMI's available to the patient at the point of dispense in pharmacy. MedAdvisor's software enables a seamless electronic solution to achieve this, ensuring information is always current and accurate.
